I've been Smitten

How are you today?

Last week I greeted my neighbor with a "Hey how are you making out?" She unfortunately and very unexpectantly lost her husband about 2 months ago. She turned to me with a smile and said, in a rather upbeat way "very fair, very fair." I said "oh good, good"
I don't know what "very fair" means. Does it mean that she is okay, some days? Does it mean she cries herself to sleep. Did I insult her by saying oh good your doing fair? It baffles me still.

As I'm asking my coworker that same question, she tells me a story of a patient that literally just left her room. This is her conversation:

Tech: Okay, your doctor will have a report in 24 hours. Have a nice day!

Patient: You have a miserable one.

Tech: Excuse me? Not sarcastic though. A genuine, she thought she heard him but wanted to make sure that's what he said.

Patient: You have a miserable day. People don't mean it when they say Have a nice day!

Tech: Okay then, bye bye!

Now was it necessary for him to act like that. No. What is wrong with people?
I'm trying to be positive in my life. I'm trying to reflect positive thoughts and nature on my kids. It's very difficult in this highly negative world.

I genuinely mean this...HAVE A NICE DAY!!!!!

I think "very fair" can be translated to "as well as can be expected..." The fact she was smiling was a good sign.

The old saying "If you have nothing good to say, don't say antyhign at all" really is best...

When people come in for an MRI-they leave all good judgement at home!!! That is something I discover every single day that I clock in to work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I firmly believe that miserable people are lonely people, and their comments are meant to bring you down so they have a little company. For that reason, I try to keep the positive people close, and the others at a distance.
